History

The Colt Single Action Army Model 1873, better known as the Peacemaker, is one of the most iconic revolvers in American history. Introduced by Colt's Manufacturing Company in 1873, it quickly became the sidearm of choice for the U.S. Cavalry, sheriffs, pioneers, and cowboys, embodying the spirit of the American West. To capitalize on the success of Winchester cartridges, Colt introduced the .44-40 Winchester Center Fire (WCF) caliber in 1878, allowing users to carry the same ammunition for both their Colt revolver and Winchester rifle. The caliber proved extremely successful and became the second most produced chambering for the Single Action Army after the legendary .45 Colt.

Beginning in 1892, Colt adopted the new "Smokeless Frame", recognizable by its transverse cylinder base pin retained by a locking screw in the front of the frame. Manufactured from improved steels intended to accommodate the introduction of smokeless powder, this evolution marked an important milestone in the history of the famous revolver. Examples from this transitional period manufactured before 1900 are now among the most sought-after by collectors.

Our Example

This Colt Single Action Army Smokeless Frame chambered in .44-40 WCF remains in very fine condition and displays an even patina that reflects its authenticity while preserving its visual appeal.

The metal surfaces have acquired an elegant dark gun metal finish over time while retaining perfectly legible markings. The two-line Colt address, typical of short-barreled revolvers, remains sharp and well defined. The patent markings, also arranged in two lines as correct for this production period, are perfectly visible. The famous Colt Rampant Horse, a finely executed marking, remains remarkably crisp on this example. The "Colt Frontier Six Shooter" marking is still present on the left side of the barrel and shows only slight localized wear consistent with holster carry. The matching serial number 167XXX, found on the frame, trigger guard, and beneath the grip, corresponds to manufacture in 1896. The original stag grips remain in excellent condition. Perfectly fitted to the frame, they contribute significantly to the elegance of this historic firearm.

Mechanically, this Colt is beyond reproach. The four characteristic clicks of the Single Action Army are clearly audible, timing is precise, and there is no cylinder play or excessive cylinder gap. The 4¾-inch barrel, chambered in .44-40 WCF, retains a bright bore with strong, well-defined rifling despite minor signs of use consistent with its age.

Combining the most desirable features sought by Western firearms enthusiasts, this Colt Single Action Army Smokeless Frame Frontier Six Shooter, manufactured in 1896, represents an outstanding collecting opportunity. Its excellent overall condition, attractive appearance, and accompanying Colt Archive Letter make it equally appealing to the advanced collector and the enthusiast of historic American firearms.

This firearm is accompanied by its official Colt Archive Letter confirming its original factory configuration.
