Smith & Wesson 2nd Model Double Action

Manufactured: 1880-1882 • Caliber: .32 S&W • Original Nickel Finish

A scarce production model, this 19th-century Smith & Wesson 2nd Model Double Action pocket revolver stands out for its excellent state of preservation, its largely intact original nickel finish, and its particularly early production. A fine American collectible revolver that fully reflects the spirit and history of the American West.

Historical Background

Smith & Wesson pocket revolvers enjoyed considerable success during the second half of the 19th century. Compact and easy to carry, they became highly popular at a time when many manufacturers were introducing small-frame defensive handguns. Their success also inspired numerous copies, whose quality varied greatly from one manufacturer to another.

The Smith & Wesson 2nd Model Double Action, chambered in .32 S&W, succeeded an earlier version produced in extremely limited numbers. While the first model is believed to have been manufactured in only about 30 examples in 1880, the second model entered production that same year and ultimately totaled just over 22,000 revolvers. Manufactured between 1880 and 1882, it remains a representative example of American pocket revolver production during the era of westward expansion.

Our Example

This Smith & Wesson 2nd Model Double Action is offered in excellent original condition. Approximately 95% of its original nickel finish remains, with only a small area of loss on one side of the cylinder. The hammer, trigger, and trigger guard still retain traces of their original case coloring and blue finish. The markings are exceptionally sharp, clear, and attractive. Its serial number, in the 2,XXX range, indicates an early production example of the Second Model. The matching serial numbers found on the grip frame, cylinder, and cylinder latch confirm the revolver's originality and integrity. It is further enhanced by a beautiful pair of mother-of-pearl grips, which remain in perfect condition.

Mechanically, the revolver functions flawlessly in both single-action and double-action modes. The top-break action opens easily, with slight resistance that suggests very limited use throughout its lifetime. Lock-up is exceptionally tight, with no play in the cylinder and virtually no cylinder gap. The 3-inch barrel, chambered in .32 S&W, features a bright mirror bore with strong rifling and only minimal signs of use.

With its outstanding original condition, well-preserved finishes, elegant mother-of-pearl grips, and early serial number, this scarce Smith & Wesson 2nd Model Double Action represents an exceptional opportunity for the collector of fine antique American black-powder revolvers.
