Winchester Repeating Arms – Model 1897 Takedown

Manufactured in 1918 – 12 Gauge – Original Blue Finish – Mirror Bore

This 1918 Winchester Model 1897 Takedown stands out for its excellent state of preservation and the remarkable condition of its bore. Retaining its original configuration, this American pump-action shotgun is a fine example of one of Winchester’s most iconic firearms.

History

Designed by John Moses Browning, the Winchester Model 1897 was developed as the successor to the Model 1893 to accommodate the new smokeless powder cartridges. Introduced in 1897, it quickly gained popularity among hunters, law enforcement agencies, and the military. Featuring a pump-action mechanism and a five-round capacity, it became one of the most iconic manually operated repeating shotguns in American history.

Its legacy was further enhanced through its service with the U.S. military, particularly in the famous "Trench Gun" configuration during the First World War, while the "Riot Gun" version was widely adopted by police departments. The Model 1897 is also renowned for its slam-fire capability, allowing rapid firing by holding the trigger while cycling the action.

The Takedown version, designed to separate into two sections for easier transport and maintenance, remains one of the most practical and desirable variants of this legendary shotgun.

Our Example

This 1918 Winchester Model 1897 Takedown has been exceptionally well preserved and retains the vast majority of its original factory blue finish. The markings remain sharp and clearly legible, and serial number 639XXX is present on both sections of the firearm, confirming its 1918 manufacture. The walnut stock and fore-end display an attractive, even patina with no significant damage and only light handling marks consistent with careful use. The buttplate is covered by a leather recoil pad, adding to the presentation of this fine example.

Mechanically, the shotgun is in excellent working order. The action cycles smoothly, feeding is reliable, and ejection is positive. The slam-fire feature remains fully functional. Chambered in 12 gauge, the barrel features a bright mirror bore, in near-new condition.

With its extensively preserved original finish, highly attractive woodwork, and exceptional bore condition, this Winchester Model 1897 Takedown represents a highly desirable example for any collection focused on historic American sporting and military firearms.

The firearm is accompanied by its official French Category D classification certificate issued by the Saint-Étienne National Proof House.
