Manufactured: 1891 – Caliber: .22 Long Rifle – Short 6-Inch Barrel with Mirror Bore
Smith & Wesson Second Model 1891 Single Shot pistol, chambered in .22 Long Rifle, a single-shot target pistol designed for precision shooting and favored by many American competitive shooters during the late 19th century.
History
By the end of the 19th century, Smith & Wesson had established itself as one of America's leading manufacturers of precision firearms. Developed specifically for target shooting, the Single Shot Model 1891 earned a reputation for its exceptional craftsmanship and remarkable accuracy. Built on a frame derived from Smith & Wesson's .38 caliber revolvers, it was offered with various barrel lengths and chamberings, notably .22 Long Rifle and .32 caliber. Its innovative design allowed complete barrel and breech assemblies to be interchanged, a feature particularly appreciated by shooters of the period.
The .22 Long Rifle versions, among the most sought-after examples today, are renowned for their outstanding target performance. Their reputation led many American competitors to adopt them, making the Single Shot Model 1891 one of the most iconic match pistols of its era.
Our Example
Finished in an attractive blue finish, this Smith & Wesson Second Model 1891 Single Shot in its 6-inch barrel configuration, the shortest length offered by the factory, remains in very fine condition. The metal surfaces retain a pleasing original blue finish, brilliant on the frame and showing moderate wear on the barrel. Markings are sharp and fully legible, including the delicate Smith & Wesson monogram stamped on the frame. The hammer retains a significant portion of its original case-hardening colors. Its serial number 9XX matches the trigger guard, confirming the integrity and authenticity of the pistol. The original Smith & Wesson logo hard-rubber grips remain perfectly fitted and exceptionally well preserved.
Mechanically, the pistol functions excellently, with smooth opening, secure lock-up, precise cocking, and a particularly crisp trigger pull. Its 6-inch .22 Long Rifle barrel features a bright mirror bore, with strong, well-defined rifling and only light traces of use. The pistol is fitted with a W.F. Sheard front sight, a desirable accessory intended to enhance shooting accuracy.
With its rare and highly desirable short-barrel configuration, outstanding overall condition, and excellent manufacturing quality, this Smith & Wesson Second Model 1891 chambered in .22 Long Rifle represents a fine opportunity for collectors of antique American target pistols.
The firearm is accompanied by its official French Category D classification certificate issued by the Saint-Étienne National Proof House.
