Colt Revolver - Single Action Army “Peacemaker”
Manufactured: 1882 • Caliber: .45 Colt • Original finish with name inscription on the back
In its short-barreled configuration, this Colt Single Action Army “Peacemaker” perfectly embodies the spirit of the American frontier. Its compact profile, attractive condition, and unquestionable authenticity make it a particularly desirable piece for collectors of historic American firearms.
Historical Background
The Colt Single Action Army, better known as the Colt Peacemaker, is one of the most iconic firearms in American history. Introduced in 1873 by Colt's Manufacturing Company, this revolver quickly earned worldwide recognition for its ruggedness, reliability, and central role in the settlement of the American West. Officially adopted by the U.S. Army to equip its cavalry regiments, it became the quintessential sidearm of an era defined by westward expansion. Its simple, robust, and effective design made it equally popular among soldiers, pioneers, lawmen, hunters, and outlaws.
Both a military and civilian firearm, and later immortalized through Hollywood Westerns, the Colt Single Action Army remains one of the most legendary revolvers ever produced. While the earliest examples were primarily manufactured for military contracts, later production reflects the enduring commercial success of this historic design.
Our Example
Note: This revolver bears the inscription “Emilio Zapata” on its grip. In the absence of supporting documentation or provenance establishing a historical connection, no additional value has been attributed to this inscription.
Manufactured in 1882, this revolver was shortened during a period when compact handguns were especially sought after for everyday carry. Relatively uncommon today, this example retains a remarkable amount of its original blue finish on both the barrel and trigger guard. The Colt markings remain sharp and fully legible. The revolver is matching numbers throughout, bearing serial number 78XXX on the frame, barrel, trigger guard, and grip frame. The Gutta-Percha grips, preserved in excellent condition, complement the revolver beautifully.
Mechanically, the revolver retains the four characteristic clicks of an original Colt Single Action Army. The action is smooth and precise. Cylinder gap and rotational play remain minimal and consistent with the firearm’s overall high level of preservation. The 4¾-inch barrel, chambered in .45 Colt, features a bright bore with well-defined rifling. The sights were modified long ago to improve practical shooting accuracy.
With its well-preserved original finish, highly sought-after short-barrel configuration, and intriguing “Emilio Zapata” inscription that leaves room for interpretation, this Colt Peacemaker stands as an outstanding example of one of the most iconic firearms of the American Old West.
