Colt Model 1860 Richards Conversion Revolver
Manufactured: 1872-1873 • Caliber .44 • Excellent Condition
Direct witnesses to the evolution of American firearms after the Civil War, Colt Conversion revolvers occupy a unique place between the legendary percussion models and the future Colt Peacemaker. True icons of the American frontier, they are now among the most sought-after historic firearms.
Historical Background
The conversion system for Colt revolvers emerged at the end of the American Civil War, as advances in firearms technology gradually rendered percussion ignition obsolete in favor of black powder metallic cartridges. Leading American manufacturers, including Colt's Patent Fire-Arms Manufacturing Company, began adapting their existing revolver designs to this new technology. These transitional firearms are now collectively known as "conversions." Following the limited success of the Thuer system, the expiration of Rollin White's patent in 1868 allowed Colt to develop a more practical and commercially viable solution. Under the direction of engineer Charles B. Richards, the "Richards Conversion" system was born, representing a crucial link between percussion revolvers such as the Colt 1851 Navy and Colt 1860 Army, and the later metallic-cartridge revolvers, including the famous Colt Single Action Army introduced in 1873.
Long overlooked by collectors, these transitional firearms nevertheless played a significant role in the settlement of the American West. Produced in relatively limited numbers and heavily used during their time, they have since become highly desirable historical collectibles.
Our Example
This remarkable Colt 1860 Richards Conversion remains in excellent overall condition, a particularly desirable attribute for this type of transitional firearm.
It belongs to the First Model Richards Conversion, a scarce variation with a production of only approximately 5,000 examples. A genuine survivor of its era, this revolver displays a level of originality and consistency that will appeal to the discerning collector. The metal surfaces retain an attractive overall appearance, highlighted by the clearly visible 1871-1872 patent markings. The revolver is matching numbers throughout, with the serial number correctly present on the frame, trigger guard, grip frame, and in abbreviated form on the cylinder. The original grip is exceptionally well preserved, displaying an attractive patina and remaining perfectly fitted to the frame.
Mechanically, the revolver is in excellent working order with no significant play. The action is crisp, while the trigger pull remains smooth and pleasant. The 8-inch barrel, chambered in .44 caliber, features a clean light-gray bore with deep, well-defined rifling.
Rarely encountered in such a fine state of preservation, this Colt Richards Conversion is an outstanding testament to the evolution of American firearms during the post-Civil War period. Bridging the gap between percussion revolvers and metallic-cartridge handguns, it represents an essential piece for any collection dedicated to the American West.
