Colt Model 1900 collectible pistol, Category D firearm, sold without accessories.
History
At the end of the 19th century, the United States had some catching up to do in the field of automatic pistols compared to European advancements. Names like Mauser, Luger, von Mannlicher, and Borchardt dominated the field, their inventions marking major milestones in the history of weaponry. In 1898, a prototype Colt Automatic Pistol, designed by John M. Browning, was presented to the American armed forces.
Two years later, this model entered production under the name Colt Automatic Pistol Model 1900, with a 7-round capacity. Total production reached approximately 3,500 units between 1900 and 1903, only a small portion of which were for military orders. Despite its limited distribution and relatively short production run, the model underwent several technical evolutions. Among these were modifications to the safety system (often criticized) and the replacement of the straight hammer with a redesigned model, a change observed around serial number 2460. Today, examples retaining their original configuration—straight hammer and safety still present, even if deactivated—are among the most sought-after by collectors of American firearms and enthusiasts of historical Colts.
Colt Automatic Pistol Model 1900 – Serial No. 21XX – Professionally Restored
Our Model
This firearm has undergone a high-quality, professionally executed restoration, giving it an exceptional appearance, difficult to distinguish from a perfectly preserved original finish.
Although the markings on the Colt Model 1900 are traditionally very fine, those on this example remain deeply engraved and perfectly legible, comparable to those of a firearm that has never been retouched. The bluing covers 100% of the surface, with only minimal wear on the edges, further enhancing its remarkable aesthetics. The hammer features a vivid, almost flawless case hardening. The serial number 21XX, identical on both halves of the frame (matching numbers), confirms the authenticity and consistency of the piece and dates its production to 1902. The screw heads are in perfect condition, a sign of meticulous maintenance. The pistol is fitted with its original gutta-percha grips, perfectly fitted and in excellent condition.
Mechanically, the pistol is flawless: the cocking action is firm and powerful, and the trigger pull is smooth and precise. The safety, as is common on this model, is deactivated. The 6-inch barrel has very fine internal rifling, with some signs of use, but these do not detract from its performance. It bears several European proof marks.
This Colt Model 1900 is a rare and iconic piece, representative of the historical transition of Colt production to the automatic pistol. Its condition and meticulous restoration make it an exceptional collector's item for the discerning enthusiast.
Note: This firearm bears the official proof marks of the Birmingham Proof House, attesting to its smokeless powder proofing.
