Colt Revolver – Model Navy 1851

Manufactured: 1863 – Caliber: .36 – Special Features: Historical firearm with an excellent barrel

History

In the early 1850s, Samuel Colt offered two flagship models: a lightweight version, the highly successful Colt Pocket Model 1849, and a more substantial version, the Colt Dragoon. To complete this line, the production of the Colt Navy Model 1851 came at just the right time. With an intermediate caliber of .36 and a perfectly balanced size, this revolver was also known as the "Belt Revolver," referring to its ability to be easily carried on a belt. Production of the Colt Navy 1851 began in 1850 and continued until 1873, with a total of 215,348 units produced. The weapon is distinguished by its octagonal barrel, the length of which varies from 5 3/16 to 12 inches, depending on the version.

Prized for its handling and balance, the Colt Navy was widely adopted by the U.S. Army before the arrival of the Colt Army Model 1860 revolver, despite its smaller caliber. During the Civil War, it remained particularly popular with both sides, especially Confederate officers and cavalry, who appreciated its reliability and accuracy.

Our Model

This Colt 1851 Navy revolver, manufactured in 1863, is a true relic of the Civil War.

It has come down to us in remarkable condition. The metal parts have been cleaned while preserving the patent markings and the address on the barrel, which remain clearly visible. A controller's mark, possibly military, is located on the butt plate. Apart from the wedge, the weapon bears the same serial number, 170XXX, and is dated 1863, the year of the terrible Battle of Gettysburg. The engraving on the cylinder, with its still very fine markings, remains faintly visible. The wooden stock is in excellent condition and perfectly fitted.

Mechanically, the weapon is in excellent condition, with virtually no play or gaps. Cocking is easy, the mainspring remains strong, and the indexing is perfect. The .36 caliber, 7.5-inch barrel is in incredible condition, with a bright, near-mirror-like bore, exhibiting deep scratches and minimal signs of use. The nipples also appear to be in very good condition.

This Colt Navy revolver, which survived the Civil War to reach us in a rare state of preservation, both aesthetically and mechanically, is an exceptional American collector's item.

Category D firearm, accompanied by its classification certificate issued by the National Proof House of Saint-Étienne, available for sale without restriction.
