History
The Marlin Model 1893, designed by John Marlin, is one of the most iconic lever-action rifles of the late 19th century, a direct rival to the Winchester. Introduced in 1893, it is distinguished by a robust square-lock mechanism and a closed receiver, ensuring remarkable strength and safety. It was also one of the first rifles chambered for the revolutionary .30-30 Winchester cartridge, designed for smokeless powder—a major advancement offering power, accuracy, and reliability for big game hunting. Made with a forged steel receiver, octagonal or round barrels, and an American walnut stock, the Model 1893 remains a benchmark and a prestigious ancestor of the famous Marlin 336. Owning a Marlin 1893 in its original caliber means possessing a true relic of the history of the American West.
Our Model
The Light Rifle version, with a medium to short barrel and half magazine, was a classic and particularly popular at the end of the 19th century.
Our example is in excellent condition, with its well-preserved metal parts having acquired a dark gunmetal patina. The factory markings remain perfectly legible, notably the famous "Special Smokeless Steel," guaranteeing compatibility with smokeless powder ammunition. The clearly visible serial number 318XXX corresponds to one of the approximately 60,000 examples manufactured, with serial numbers common to several models. The wooden parts are in very good condition and undamaged, the forend showing a slightly darker hue due to more frequent handling.
The mechanism is in perfect working order, with the smooth action typical of Marlin rifles. The desirable 20-inch octagonal barrel, short and manageable, has a beautiful light gray bore with deep rifling. This Marlin Rifle, in this sought-after configuration and in such fine condition, also benefits from a caliber that is still readily available today.
Firearm sold with its classification certificate – Category D(e) historical firearm, issued by the National Proof House of Saint-Étienne.
