Manufactured: 1861 – Caliber: .44 – Special Features: Early production, mirror-bright bore
History
The Colt Army Model 1860 revolver, a black powder revolver chambered in .44 caliber, was produced in over 200,000 units. The American Civil War massively boosted its distribution: the U.S. Army alone purchased over 127,000 units. Before the arrival of the famous Peacemaker (Single Action Army), the Colt 1860 was the emblematic weapon of the conquest of the West. Produced until 1873, its success stemmed from its reasonable weight, proven reliability, and powerful caliber.
The so-called "military" versions are distinguished by the cutout in the right-hand side shield, allowing for the possible attachment of a detachable shoulder stock. The Colt Army 1860 is among the most iconic American collectible firearms. Military examples dating from the Civil War era, when well-preserved, are major pieces in any collection of authentic Colt black powder firearms.
Our Model
Despite the signs of age, this Colt Army 1860 revolver is an exceptional collector's item. Its very early production date, 1861, suggests Confederate military use, and its excellent bore is a testament to its quality.
The firearm presents a cohesive appearance: the metal parts have acquired an elegant gunmetal patina, while retaining clearly legible markings—Colt’s Patent and caliber on the frame, as well as the Colt address on the top of the barrel (slightly faded with age). The serial number 15XXX matches on all the main parts: frame, trigger guard, cylinder, and, remarkably, on the wedge, a part that is often replaced. The butt plate shows slight, insignificant oxidation, which the future owner may choose to have treated or not. Inspection markings are visible, such as the “L” on the trigger guard and several dots adjacent to the serial numbers, enhancing the appeal and charm of this firearm. The perfectly fitted walnut stock shows no noticeable flaws.
This firearm is also distinguished by its exceptional mechanical condition: the .44 caliber (8") barrel has a mirror-bright bore with deep rifling and minimal signs of use. The mechanism is fully functional, with no play or gaps, precise action, perfect indexing, and nipples in good condition.
This Colt Army 1860, emblematic of the Civil War and the conquest of the West, meets all the desirable criteria: its early production, mirror-bright bore, and flawless mechanism. A rare and highly desirable firearm, worthy of a fine collection of American black powder firearms.
Category D firearm, accompanied by its classification certificate issued by the National Proof House of Saint-Étienne, available for sale to adults.
