History

In 1884, French chemist Paul Vieille developed smokeless powder, a major invention that revolutionized global weaponry. More powerful and cleaner-burning than black powder, it paved the way for a new generation of military firearms utilizing high-velocity, small-caliber projectiles. Faced with advancements in Europe—specifically the French Lebel rifle and the German Mauser—the US Army launched its own extensive evaluation program. After testing over thirty-five different models, the US Army ultimately adopted the Norwegian rifle designed by Ole Krag and Erik Jørgensen. Production began at the Springfield Armory in 1894. The Krag-Jørgensen became the US Army's first modern service rifle chambered for the new .30-40 Krag cartridge. It is distinguished by its remarkable side-loading system and exceptional build quality. Used notably during the Spanish-American War of 1898 and the acquisition of overseas territories, the Springfield Krag is today an essential piece for any collector of US military service arms. Our Model

This specimen is an authentic Springfield Krag Model 1898 rifle that likely saw a second life in a shooting club or as a training weapon following its military service. A small identification plate bearing the number "51" appears to attest to this subsequent use.

The rifle currently features an interesting "Sporting" configuration, with a shortened handguard that significantly lightens the weapon's profile while retaining its standard-issue 30-inch barrel. The metal components remain in excellent original condition, displaying a pleasing dark "gunmetal" patina and significant traces of the original period bluing. The standard Model 1898 markings are perfectly visible and legible. The original wood furniture has been preserved; it still bears the famous "Proof" stamp and the "74" inspection mark, confirming its authenticity. The stock displays a beautiful, uniform color with a consistent aged patina and no significant damage. The original metal buttplate fits perfectly.

The legendary build quality of the Springfield Krag is fully evident in this specimen; the action remains perfectly functional, operating smoothly and precisely. Its standout feature is the standard 30-inch barrel chambered in .30-40 Krag. The bore is in remarkable "mirror" condition with crisp, deep rifling, ensuring excellent shooting performance to this day.

Rare on the European market in this "Sporting" configuration—which is particularly pleasant to handle—this Springfield Krag represents an attractive opportunity for collectors and shooters alike, offered at a very appealing price.

The rifle comes with its official Category D classification certificate, issued by the Saint-Étienne National Proof House.
