Marlin Rifle – Model 1893 Smokeless Takedown
Manufacture: 1893+ – Caliber: .30-30 Winchester – Takedown Version
The Takedown version of the Marlin Model 1893 is one of the configurations most sought after by enthusiasts of antique American firearms. Chambered in the famous .30-30 Winchester caliber and presented in excellent condition, this specimen will appeal to both collectors and shooters passionate about Western-style firearms.
History
Designed by John Marlin, the Marlin Model 1893 ranks among the most significant lever-action rifles in American history. Introduced in 1893, it quickly established itself as the primary competitor to contemporary Winchester models, thanks to its robust square-bolt locking mechanism and a closed receiver that offered superior protection against dust and debris. The Model 1893 was also one of the first rifles offered in the new .30-30 Winchester caliber, which utilized smokeless powder. This revolutionary cartridge delivered increased velocity, range, and hunting effectiveness, contributing significantly to the model's commercial success. Manufactured with forged steel receivers, round or octagonal barrels, and American walnut stocks, the Marlin 1893 remains one of the brand's most cherished models today. It is also the direct ancestor of the famous Marlin 336, which secured the manufacturer's enduring renown throughout the 20th century.
Our Model
The Takedown version allows the rifle to be quickly disassembled into two parts. At the time, this option cost $4—nearly 30% of the firearm's total price—which partly explains the special interest collectors show in it today.
This specimen features the classic configuration, including a 24-inch octagonal barrel and a full-length magazine. The metal components retain a beautiful, uniform patina and traces of the original bluing, with no oxidation. The markings are perfectly preserved and fully legible; notably, the famous "Special Smokeless Steel" inscription and the .30-30 Winchester caliber marking are clearly visible. The serial number (274XXX), stamped beneath the receiver, indicates a likely date of manufacture around 1903. The original wood furniture displays a lovely, consistent tone and remains in excellent condition, free of any significant damage. The original metal buttplate fits perfectly.
Mechanically, the firearm is in remarkable working order. The action is smooth and fluid, while cartridge feeding and ejection operate flawlessly. The 24-inch octagonal barrel features an excellent, bright bore with deep rifling and only minor signs of use consistent with its age. A sling swivel was added by a previous owner.
Thanks to its excellent state of preservation, "Takedown" configuration, and .30-30 Winchester caliber, this Marlin Model 1893 is a particularly compelling addition to any collection of American firearms from the era of the Wild West and the early 20th century.
The firearm comes with its official classification certificate (Category D(e)), issued by the Saint-Étienne National Proof House.
