History
The Colt Single Action Army—also known as the "Peacemaker" (in .45 caliber) and the "Frontier" (in .44-40)—is a true legend in the history of American firearms. Introduced in 1873 by Colt’s Manufacturing Company, this revolver quickly gained worldwide renown thanks to its ruggedness, reliability, and pivotal role in the settling of the American West. Officially adopted by the U.S. Army to equip its cavalry regiments, the Colt SAA established itself as the definitive sidearm of an entire era. Its simple, robust, and efficient design made it an ideal companion in the field for soldiers and civilians alike—whether pioneers, lawmen, or outlaws.
Starting in 1892, Colt undertook a major evolution of its iconic Single Action Army revolver by reinforcing the frame design through the use of stronger steel. This evolution—commonly referred to as the "Smokeless Frame" or the transition from "Black Powder to Smokeless Powder" capability—is characterized notably by the adoption of a through-cylinder pin secured by a transverse button, replacing the front screw found on earlier models. This modification reflects Colt's foresight in anticipating the use of the new smokeless powders that were then rapidly gaining ground. It should be noted, however, that Colt only officially sanctioned the use of smokeless powder in revolvers produced after 1900. The transitional models known as "Smokeless Frame" revolvers remain highly sought after by collectors today due to their pivotal role in the evolution of the Colt SAA.
Our Model
This previously restored firearm now features an elegant "polished-in-the-white" finish, giving it a classic, uniform aesthetic. The Colt's Manufacturing Company markings have largely been preserved and remain clearly visible, with the exception of the caliber marking on the left side of the barrel and the famous Colt "prancing pony" logo, both of which have been slightly softened by the restoration process. The two-line Colt address—characteristic of the 4¾-inch barrel—is present and correct for this configuration. The screw heads remain well-preserved, reflecting the care taken by previous owners. The serial number (188XXX)—which matches perfectly across the various components—dates this Colt Single Action Army to 1899. The current grips are replacements that complement the firearm beautifully; they are in excellent condition and appear slightly oversized—a feature that will appeal to some more than others depending on personal preference.
Mechanically, the firearm functions satisfactorily; there is very slight play and a standard barrel-cylinder gap, both of which are common for this type of antique revolver. Indexing is perfect, and both the cocking action and trigger pull are smooth. The 4¾-inch barrel, chambered in .44-40 (44 WCF), features a fine satin-finish bore with deep, well-defined rifling, ensuring good accuracy.
This Colt Single Action Army—in the "smokeless frame" configuration favored by Western shooting enthusiasts—is an authentic American collector's piece offered here at a very reasonable price point, given its configuration and date of manufacture.
Firearm accompanied by its official classification certificate (Category D), issued by the Saint-Étienne National Proof House.
