History

The Colt Single Action Army, better known as the “Peacemaker,” is undoubtedly one of the most iconic revolvers in American history. Introduced in 1873 by Colt's Patent Fire-Arms Manufacturing Company, it quickly established itself as the gold standard thanks to its ruggedness, reliability, and mechanical simplicity. Adopted by the U.S. Army to equip the cavalry, it became the standard-issue sidearm of the era of westward expansion. Used by both military personnel and civilians—sheriffs, pioneers, and Wild West figures—it embodies the spirit of the conquest of the West. A version chambered in .44-40—compatible with long guns such as the Winchester 1873—was soon introduced. This model, known as the “Frontier,” represents the second-largest production run for the SAA. Immortalized by cinema and popular culture, it remains an essential piece for collectors of authentic Western firearms today.

Our Model

This specific example features a high-quality vintage re-nickel finish, giving it an excellent appearance free of oxidation. The markings are clearly visible and correct, notably the two-line Colt address on the barrel, which is characteristic of the 4¾-inch barrel length. The revolver is matching-numbered, with serial number 60XXX appearing on the frame, trigger guard, and butt, indicating manufacture in 1880—right in the era of the conquest of the American West. The re-nickel finish has slightly softened some areas but has not compromised overall legibility. The screw heads are in excellent condition, reflecting a well-cared-for firearm. The original grips show a uniform patina, are free of damage, and fit perfectly.

Mechanically, the revolver is in perfect working order; it has no play or excessive cylinder gap, and the action is crisp, featuring the distinct "four clicks" characteristic of Colt revolvers. The 4¾-inch barrel, chambered in .44-40 Winchester, has a bright, smooth bore with excellent, deep rifling, ensuring accuracy and a pleasant shooting experience. Its superb mechanical condition makes the revolver fully functional and a joy to shoot.

The firearm comes with an official classification certificate designating it as Category D, issued by the Saint-Étienne National Proof House.
