History

The Smith & Wesson Model 1½ Second Issue is an iconic firearm of the American Old West era. With approximately 100,000 units produced between 1868 and 1875, this small self-defense weapon—chambered in .32 Rimfire—was offered with 2½-inch and 3½-inch barrels and came in various factory finishes, including some highly luxurious options like the rare "gold" version. Compact, reliable, and easy to use, it was widely carried as a pocket pistol throughout the American West.

Our Model

This specimen remains in untouched condition, displaying a beautiful, perfectly uniform light-gray patina. The markings, particularly those on the top of the barrel, remain crisp and clearly legible. The serial number stamped on the butt (34XXX) indicates early production, as the Second Issue numbering began around 26,301. The original wooden grip is in excellent condition and fits perfectly.

Mechanically, the revolver functions very well, exhibiting the slight play and cylinder gap typical of firearms from this era. Cocking is smooth, the trigger pull is light, and the cylinder indexing is satisfactory. The 3½-inch barrel is in very good condition, featuring a clean bore and deep, well-defined rifling.

A classic American West pocket pistol, representative of a model widely carried during the late 19th century.
