History
The Savage Model 1899 is a lever-action rifle designed by Arthur W. Savage and introduced by the Savage Arms Company in 1899, succeeding the Model 1895. It is distinguished by its internal rotary magazine—allowing for the use of pointed bullets—its robust rotary locking bolt for enhanced safety, and the inclusion of a loaded-chamber indicator and a cartridge counter. Offered in numerous calibers (.303 Savage, .250-3000 Savage, .300 Savage, .30-30 Winchester, etc.), it quickly achieved great success among hunters and sport shooters.
From the 1920s onwards, it was officially renamed the Model 99 and remained in production until 1998, becoming one of the most iconic lever-action rifles of the 20th century. Today, the Savage Model 1899 is highly sought after by collectors for its innovative design and its major significance in the history of American firearms.
Our Model
This Savage Model 1899 rifle is in excellent overall condition.
The metal parts retain a large proportion of their original bluing; the lever has also preserved some of its period case-hardening, testifying to a well-preserved firearm. The factory markings are correct, deep, and perfectly legible, notably the manufacturer's address on the top of the barrel and the .30-30 Winchester caliber designation. The serial number 304XXX indicates manufacture in 1927. The wooden components have been restored and feature a beautiful, perfectly uniform color. The metal buttplate bears the brand's logo and is perfectly fitted. This is the "Takedown" model, allowing for easy disassembly into two parts for transport or storage.
Mechanically, the firearm is in excellent working order: smooth cocking, a crisp trigger pull, and perfect overall fluidity. The 22-inch barrel features a near-mirror bore with deep, consistent rifling, along with very slight traces of powder residue at the muzzle. It is chambered for the highly regarded .30-30 Winchester cartridge—ammunition that remains readily available.
This Savage 1899—presented in its most classic configuration and a sought-after caliber—will appeal equally to collectors of antique firearms and to shooters who appreciate fully functional historical guns.
The firearm is sold with an official certificate classifying it as a Category D historical weapon, issued by the Saint-Étienne National Proof House.
