This remarkable Smith & Wesson New Model No. 3 in .44 Russian caliber is one of the most iconic American revolvers of the late 19th century. Preserved in exceptional condition—both aesthetically and mechanically—this collector's item is a prime piece for any enthusiast of American firearms from the era of the Wild West.

History

The Smith & Wesson Model No. 3 family of revolvers achieved immense commercial and military success worldwide. These models marked a significant milestone in the evolution of handguns, being among the first mass-produced revolvers designed to fire metallic cartridges. Their key feature was the "top-break" frame system, which allowed the gun to open and automatically eject spent casings simultaneously, offering remarkable reloading speed for the time.

The New Model No. 3, with approximately 35,000 units produced starting in 1878, represents the pinnacle of this lineage. Chambered notably in the famous .44 Russian caliber, it incorporated mechanical improvements that made it one of the highest-performing revolvers of its day. Highly prized both in the United States and abroad, it was used by lawmen, sheriffs, and Texas Rangers, as well as many civilians, during the era of the American West. Today, the New Model No. 3 remains an essential model for any collection dedicated to 19th-century American firearms.

Our Model

This particular specimen stands out immediately due to its remarkable state of preservation. It has remained in its original configuration... ...original and unrestored, it retains a superb period blued finish that still covers almost all of its metal surfaces. The hammer still displays its original case-hardening, which is remarkably well-preserved. The Smith & Wesson markings are crisp, finely engraved, and perfectly legible. Serial number 28XXX matches across the weapon's main components—specifically the frame, cylinder, and locking mechanism—confirming the assembly's integrity. A lanyard ring was originally present on the grip but was removed at some point during the weapon's history. The piece is complemented by magnificent, perfectly fitted bone grips that further enhance the revolver's elegance.

The mechanical condition is truly remarkable. The lock-up is precise, the timing is perfect, and the weapon exhibits absolutely no play, either when locked or during operation. Its overall mechanical state reflects a level of preservation rarely seen in a revolver of this era. The 6½-inch barrel, chambered in .44 Russian, features an exceptional, mirror-like bore with perfectly crisp, deep rifling. The weapon's overall condition suggests it has seen very little use throughout its lifetime.

This single-action S&W revolver comes in a period Smith & Wesson box that dates to slightly later than the firearm itself. However, the box's label specifies the .44 caliber and the 6½-inch barrel length—matching this specific example perfectly—making it a particularly interesting addition to the presentation of this collector's piece.

With its exceptional state of preservation, iconic .44 Russian caliber, and accompanying Smith & Wesson box, this New Model No. 3 is a premier piece for any collection of American firearms from the Western era.

The weapon is accompanied by its official classification certificate designating it as Category D(e), issued by the National Proof House of... Saint-Étienne.
