History

The Winchester Model 1897 shotgun is an iconic firearm in American gun history, designed by John Moses Browning. Its development marked a key step in the evolution of pump-action shotguns. Successor to the Model 1893, it was specifically designed to meet the demands of the new smokeless powder cartridges, which required a more robust and reliable construction. From its introduction in 1897, it enjoyed immediate success, particularly among hunters, law enforcement, and the military. It is distinguished by its 5-round capacity and innovative mechanics, quickly becoming a benchmark in the pump-action shotgun market. The early years of production demonstrate the expertise of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, with meticulous finishing and manufacturing quality that earned it a reputation. Initially produced in limited series, these early versions are now highly sought after by collectors.

The Model 1897 gained further renown through its use by the US Army, notably as the famous "Trench Gun" during World War I and the "Riot Gun" used by American police. Its slam-fire mechanism, allowing for rapid fire as long as the trigger is held down and the user pumps the action to chamber a new cartridge, made it a formidable weapon on the battlefield.

Our Model

This Winchester Rifle 1897 is a rare, sought-after piece from a later production run, after 1940.

It is presented in excellent, untouched condition, with much of its original bluing still clearly visible. The metal parts are in perfect condition, without any oxidation, and the deeply engraved markings remain crisp and perfectly legible. The serial number 968XXX, present on the two main components of the rifle, confirms its authenticity and its late, post-1940 manufacture, a highly prized feature among collectors. This model is equipped with its "Red Head" rubber recoil pad, a period accessory favored by shooters. The superb wood is remarkably well-preserved, with a uniform and natural color, showing no visible restoration.

Mechanically, this rifle is in excellent working order, both in semi-automatic and slam-fire modes, a feature emblematic of the 1897 model. The action is smooth and fluid. The 30-inch barrel, in 12 gauge with a full choke, has a mirror-bright bore, with only a few minor marks at the muzzle, which do not affect accuracy or safety. This Winchester 1897, in its Takedown version, easily disassembled into two parts, is an iconic piece of Winchester production.

An exceptional, late-production firearm, fully functional, it will suit both a discerning shooter and a Winchester collector seeking an authentic and well-preserved example.

This firearm comes with its official Category D classification certificate, issued by the National Proof House of Saint-Étienne.
