History

The Winchester Model 1890 is one of Winchester’s most iconic small-caliber firearms. Designed by John Moses Browning for the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, more than 800,000 examples were produced between 1890 and 1932.

Its smooth and modern pump-action mechanism proved highly successful with shooters and small-caliber users. The Model 1890 was offered in several chamberings, including .22 Short, .22 Long and .22 Long Rifle.

Our Model

Remaining in a fine original condition, this Winchester Model 1890 retains a substantial amount of its original bluing, still clearly visible on the metal surfaces. The factory markings — Winchester address, model designation and .22 Long caliber marking — are deeply struck and clearly legible. Serial number 176XXX corresponds to 1903 production.

The original wood furniture remains in very good condition, with an attractive even coloration and only minor handling marks consistent with the age of the rifle. The metal buttplate is correctly fitted. This Winchester is also equipped with the highly desirable Takedown configuration, allowing the rifle to be quickly separated into two sections.

Mechanically, the rifle is in good working condition, with smooth operation, firm lock-up and a positive trigger pull. The 24-inch octagonal barrel, chambered in .22 Long, shows some signs of use but retains well-defined rifling. The .22 Long chambering, representing a relatively small proportion of Model 1890 production, adds particular interest to this early example.
