Smith & Wesson New Model Russian – Excellent Mechanical Condition

History

The Smith & Wesson New Model Russian revolver featured several improvements over its predecessor—most notably a redesigned grip—and was manufactured between 1874 and 1878. A total of 60,200 units were produced, characterized primarily by a 6½-inch barrel and .44 Russian caliber chambering. The grip frame typically bears the engraving "1874." In the American West, famous figures such as Jesse James adopted the Model No. 3 due to its ruggedness, accuracy, and firepower.

Our Model

This Smith & Wesson No. 3 revolver is typical of the handguns that circulated in the American West. Its metal components display a beautiful gunmetal patina free of oxidation, with traces of the original blued finish still visible in protected areas and on the frame. The lanyard ring at the base of the grip has been removed, though this does not detract from the weapon's authenticity. The markings are deeply stamped and well-preserved; the English-language barrel inscription confirms it is a civilian model, while the serial number (46XXX) is engraved on the butt of the grip.

Mechanically, the revolver is in excellent condition. The top-break action and the extraction system for black-powder metallic cartridges function perfectly. The hammer strike is powerful, and cylinder indexing is precise—with no play or excessive barrel-cylinder gap—making it a fully functional firearm. The 6½-inch barrel is in perfect condition, featuring a mirror-like bore and crisp rifling. The original walnut grips are attractive and flawless, adding an authentic touch to this collector's piece. This Smith & Wesson Third Model is a rare and iconic piece, highly prized by collectors and enthusiasts of Old West firearms.
