History
The Colt Double Action New Army and Navy Model 1892 and its variants, including the 1894, 1895, 1896, 1901 and 1903 models, form one of the major families of American military double-action revolvers. Developed by Colt, the design introduced a more modern mechanism and faster reloading through its swing-out cylinder.
Adopted by both the United States Army and United States Navy, the Colt Double Action Army represents an important transition from earlier fixed-frame revolvers to modern military designs. More than 270,000 examples were produced across all variants.
Our Model
This Colt Double Action New Army Model 1895, manufactured in late 1904, was engraved after leaving the Colt factory. The engraving is finely executed and remains in very good condition, complemented by a substantial amount of its original nickel finish. The cylinder features a gold finish within the flutes, while the screws, hammer and trigger retain an attractive fire blue finish, characteristic of Colt firearms. The preparation of the surfaces prior to engraving removed part of the original markings. The caliber marking remains visible on the side of the barrel, along with a faint “5” marking on the trigger guard. Serial number 240XXX, located beneath the grips, corresponds to late 1904 production, close to the transition into 1905. The assembly numbers 828A are visible on both frame sections. The revolver is fitted with attractive Colt grips, in excellent condition and correctly fitted.
Mechanically, the revolver is in excellent working condition, with no significant play and a very tight barrel-to-cylinder gap, suggesting limited use throughout its history. The action functions properly in both single and double action, with positive cocking and precise cylinder indexing. The late-production 6-inch .38 Long Colt barrel has a bright satin bore, with light signs of use and well-defined rifling.
This Colt Double Action Army Model 1895 combines late production, post-factory engraving and particularly good mechanical condition, making it an original collectible example of Colt's early twentieth-century double-action revolvers.
