History
The Winchester Model 1895, designed by John Moses Browning for the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, represented an important development in Winchester lever-action rifles when introduced in 1895. Unlike earlier tubular-magazine models, the Model 1895 adopted a fixed box magazine, allowing the use of pointed cartridges and more powerful calibers. The rifle also enjoyed an important military career and was notably used during the Spanish-American War. Production continued until 1940, with approximately 426,000 rifles manufactured, including a major series produced for the famous Russian contract.
Our Model
This Winchester Model 1895 remains in a fine original condition. The metal parts retain a significant amount of their original blue finish, with an attractive and homogeneous appearance. The Winchester markings, patents, model designation and caliber markings are correct and remain clearly visible. Deeply struck, they confirm the authenticity of the rifle. The serial number 403XXX, located beneath the lever, corresponds to manufacture in 1917.
The rifle retains the provision for a saddle ring, a configuration incompatible with the Lyman sight currently fitted. The original wood remains in its factory finish and is in excellent condition, with an attractive homogeneous color and no apparent repairs. The stock features a genuine mother-of-pearl decoration. The buttstock is fitted with a Pachmayr recoil pad.
Mechanically, this Winchester is in excellent working condition. The action is smooth, the trigger pull is clean and the ejection is correct, reflecting the good preservation of the mechanism. The 22-inch barrel, chambered in .30-06, features a mirror bore with deep, well-defined rifling. The rifle is also fitted with a period Lyman sight, an accessory particularly appreciated on Model 1895 rifles for both its historical interest and its practical use.
This Winchester Model 1895 carbine in 30-06 caliber, retaining much of its original condition and fitted with a Lyman sight, represents an interesting addition to a collection of historic American firearms.
The firearm is supplied with its official French classification certificate issued by the Saint-Étienne Proof House.
