History
Designed by John Moses Browning for the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, the Winchester Model 1897 is the pump-action shotgun that firmly established this repeating mechanism in the United States. Introduced in 1897, it succeeded the Model 1893, featuring a reinforced action specifically designed for smokeless powder cartridges. Thanks to its ruggedness, five-shot capacity, and rapid operation, it achieved immense success among hunters, law enforcement agencies, and the U.S. military. Its famous "slam-fire" capability—allowing the user to fire by holding down the trigger while cycling the pump—continues to contribute to its reputation today.
Our Model
The combination of a high serial number and a fixed barrel suggests that this Winchester Model 1897 was likely produced to meet a specific customer request.
The firearm remains in excellent condition. The metal components retain a significant portion of their original blued finish, while the Winchester markings are perfectly correct, deeply stamped, and fully legible. Serial number 905XXX confirms this desirable late-production 1938 model. The 12-gauge barrel markings also correspond to the 1893 pattern. The original wood features a superb, uniform finish, free of repairs or damage. The Winchester buttplate, bearing the brand's monogram, is perfectly preserved.
Mechanically, the shotgun functions excellently, offering smooth cocking and ejection. The "slam-fire" capability is fully operational. Its 32-inch barrel has a pristine, mirror-like bore.
A rare Winchester Model 1897 pump-action shotgun with a fixed barrel, combining late production, an uncommon configuration, and a condition that makes it particularly attractive for a collection of American firearms.
The firearm is sold with its official classification certificate designating it as a Category D historical weapon, issued by the Saint-Étienne National Proof House.
