Springfield Rifle – Trapdoor Model 1873–1878
Manufacture: 1878+ – Caliber: .45-70 Government – Mirror-finish bore, sling
A fine example of the Springfield Trapdoor Model 1878 in its original military configuration, retaining its regulation markings, issue stock, and a remarkable, pristine mirror-finish bore. An authentic American collector's piece, a witness to the Indian Wars.
History
The Springfield Trapdoor was the first metallic-cartridge service rifle adopted by the United States Army. Developed by Springfield Armory and officially adopted in 1873, it is distinguished by its famous hinged breechblock system—nicknamed the "Trapdoor"—which allows for direct loading of a cartridge into the chamber. Chambered for the powerful .45-70 Government cartridge, it became the standard-issue rifle for American soldiers throughout the Indian Wars era. It notably equipped cavalry and infantry units on the Western frontier before being gradually replaced in the 1890s by the repeating Springfield Krag.
Our Model
This Springfield Trapdoor Model 1878 is in excellent original condition, both aesthetically and mechanically. The metal parts have acquired an elegant, uniform "gunmetal" patina—perfectly sound and free of oxidation—characteristic of carefully preserved military firearms. The markings are perfectly crisp and consistent with standard military production, including "U.S. Springfield," "U.S. Model 1878," and the serial number 234XXX. The stock retains its military inspection cartouche—perfectly visible on the right side—as well as the original proof mark near the trigger guard, attesting to the authenticity of the wood, which has never been restored. The wood displays a beautiful, uniform tone with a natural patina and only a few light signs of use or handling, entirely consistent with a genuine military-issue firearm.
Mechanically, the rifle functions excellently, with smooth breech opening and locking. Its 32 5/8-inch barrel, chambered in .45-70 Government, features a mirror-like bore with perfectly defined rifling.
A superb Springfield Trapdoor Model 1878, combining authenticity, remarkable condition, and one of the most iconic military calibers in American history.
This firearm comes with its sling.
The weapon is sold with its classification certificate designating it as a Category D historical firearm, issued by the Saint-Étienne National Proof House.
