Winchester Rifle – Model 1897 Takedown

Manufactured: 1940+ – Gauge: 12/70 – Excellent Late Production

Late production Winchester Model 1897 Takedown in 12 gauge, a collectible pump-action shotgun retaining its original bluing, its characteristic large pump action, and a remarkable mirror-finish bore.

History

Designed by John Moses Browning, the Winchester Model 1897 is one of the most iconic pump-action shotguns in American history. Produced for over half a century, it became a favorite among hunters, law enforcement, and the military thanks to its robustness and rapid operation. The last production examples are distinguished in particular by their wide handguard, now highly prized by collectors. The two-piece takedown version, along with the famous Slam Fire system, contributes to the reputation of this legendary model.

Our Model

This Winchester Model 1897 Takedown is in incredible condition. The metal parts retain a deep and even original bluing, while the large pump action, characteristic of later production models, gives it a particularly attractive appearance. The Winchester markings are perfectly true, crisp, and fully legible. The serial number 969XXX corresponds to a 1940 manufacture and matches on both parts of the takedown configuration. The original wood is in excellent condition, perfectly fitted, and has a beautiful, even color. The buttplate is adorned with the brand logo and is in perfect condition.

Mechanically, the rifle is in excellent working order. The action is smooth, the feed is consistent, and the ejection is as expected. The Slam Fire system is fully operational. The 30-inch 12/70 gauge full choke barrel has a mirror-bright bore in near-new condition.

This late-production Winchester Model 1897 Takedown in 16 gauge is a genuine collector's item, combining a sought-after configuration with remarkable preservation.

The firearm comes with its official Category D(e) classification certificate, issued by the National Proof House of Saint-Étienne.
