Bolen & Syms – Medium Frame Pepperbox

Manufacture: 1830–1850 – Caliber: .31 – Original engraving

Produced prior to the Civil War, this Bolen & Syms Medium Frame Pepperbox is an elegant collectible black powder pistol. Its "bag-shaped" grip, original engraving, and the limited production output of this New York manufacturer make it a particularly interesting piece for enthusiasts of early 19th-century American firearms.

History

Based in New York, the Bolen & Syms company produced a range of percussion pepperbox pistols intended for personal defense between the 1830s and 1850s. These weapons are distinguished by their "concealed underhammer" mechanism, featuring a hammer entirely hidden within the frame. This design allowed for safer, more discreet carry in a pocket or bag—hence the common reference to the "bag-shaped" grip style.

Much of this production did not bear the manufacturer's name, as the weapons were often sold under the brands of wholesalers or distributors. Produced in various sizes—Small Frame, Medium Frame, or Dragoon—and in calibers ranging from .25 to .36, Bolen & Syms pepperboxes were always manufactured in relatively limited quantities.

Our Model

This Bolen & Syms Medium Frame Underhammer Pepperbox is an elegant engraved example. It remains in its original, unrestored condition and presents beautifully for a firearm of this era. The metal components retain much of their original engraving, accompanied by significant traces of the original blued finish. As is frequently the case with Bolen & Syms productions, no markings or serial numbers are visible without disassembly—a characteristic entirely consistent with the brand's standards. The wooden grips are original and in excellent condition, free of cracks or repairs, and retain their fine varnished finish.

The mechanism remains functional. The "Concealed Underhammer" system, featuring a fully hidden hammer, operates solely via the ring trigger in double-action mode. The action exhibits slight play—typical of this type of mechanism, which lacks a true cylinder lock—yet indexing remains accurate and the strike is crisp. The six smoothbore barrels are free of defects. The nipples are original and well-preserved.

Manufactured several years prior to the Civil War, this type of pepperbox continued to serve as a personal defense weapon during that conflict. Thanks to its rarity, engraving, and excellent condition, this specimen is a particularly fine example of early American percussion firearms.
