History
The Colt Lightning Model 1877 was the first double-action revolver designed by the legendary Colt firm. Its design draws direct inspiration from the famous Colt Single Action Army (SAA), appearing as a scaled-down, modernized version of that iconic model. The Lightning 1877 can thus be viewed as a natural evolution of the SAA, adapted to meet the growing demands of shooters at the time. While Colt had explored the double-action principle as early as the 1850s, the advent of the metallic cartridge truly enabled the practical implementation of this mechanism. Mechanically more sophisticated than the rugged single-action models, the Colt Lightning 1877 proved more complex to disassemble and repair. However, despite its more delicate mechanism, it enjoyed great commercial success, with production exceeding 165,000 units. This model marked a major turning point for Colt, paving the way for a new generation of double-action revolvers that would gradually establish themselves alongside the still-popular single-action models.
Colt 1877 Double-Action Revolver – Flawless Mechanics
Our Model
This Colt Model 1877 Lightning double-action revolver—the classic version featuring an ejector rod—comes to us in excellent condition. The blued components retain much of their original finish, with slight wear on friction points that lends the piece an appealing vintage character. The frame displays beautiful traces of its original case-hardening. The markings are deeply stamped and perfectly legible, particularly those on the barrel (manufacturer's address and caliber) and the serial number. The latter—144XXX—is visible on the frame, trigger guard, and butt, indicating manufacture in 1903.
Mechanically, this firearm is in flawless condition. It functions perfectly in both single and double action, with no play or cylinder gap upon firing. The cocking action is smooth, as is the trigger pull, reflecting the model's high build quality. The 4½-inch barrel, chambered for the .38 Long Colt black-powder cartridge, features a mirror-like bore with excellent rifling. The revolver comes with its original gutta-percha grips—adorned with the Colt "prancing pony" emblem—which are in excellent, flawless condition, showing only a light patina consistent with the weapon's authenticity.
This legendary American collector's piece is one of the iconic models representing Colt's finest craftsmanship.
