History

Introduced in 1873, the Colt Single Action Army quickly became the most iconic revolver of the American West. Adopted by the army, sheriffs, cowboys, and pioneers alike, it established itself as one of the most famous firearms in U.S. history. In 1878, Colt introduced the "Frontier Six Shooter" version, chambered for the .44-40 Winchester Center Fire (WCF) cartridge. This development allowed users to share the same ammunition as the legendary Winchester Model 1873—a significant advantage in the American West, where the revolver and carbine were often carried together.

Our Model

This Colt Frontier Single Action Army "Six Shooter" in .44-40 WCF caliber is in remarkable original condition. The firearm retains substantial traces of its original Colt blue finish on the most protected areas. The markings are perfectly crisp and consistent with Colt production of that era. The famous "Colt Frontier Six Shooter" inscription remains clearly visible on the left side of the barrel, alongside the manufacturer's standard markings. The serial number 145XXX—found on the frame, trigger guard, and grip frame—confirms a manufacture date of 1892. The original grips are in an excellent state of preservation and fit perfectly.

Mechanically, the revolver is in excellent working order: it features four distinct "Colt" clicks, crisp cocking, precise indexing, firm lock-up, a strong hammer strike, and no cylinder gap. Its 7½-inch .44-40 WCF barrel has a bright bore with deep, well-defined rifling, showing only a few minor, inconsequential spots.

A superb Colt Frontier Six Shooter, combining the legendary .44-40 Winchester caliber, authentic original condition, and one of the most iconic revolver variants of the American Old West.

The firearm is sold with its classification certificate designating it as a Category D historical weapon, issued by the Saint-Étienne National Proof House.
