Smith & Wesson Double Action Fourth Model revolver in .32 S&W Short caliber, featuring a remarkable original nickel finish, matching serial numbers, and excellent mechanical condition.

History

Smith & Wesson Double Action revolvers in .32 and .38 calibers were among the most popular American pocket revolvers of the late 19th century. Equipped with an exposed hammer, they offered the ability to fire in both single and double action—a highly appreciated feature at the time. The Fourth Model succeeded earlier versions, introducing several mechanical improvements, notably a new cylinder stop. Approximately 240,000 units of this series were produced; today, they are highly sought after by collectors of American black-powder revolvers.

Our Model

This Smith & Wesson Double Action Fourth Model retains an original nickel finish estimated at nearly 100%, presenting a remarkably uniform appearance. The hammer and trigger still show a significant amount of their original case-hardening, while the trigger guard retains its original bluing. The deeply stamped markings are perfectly legible. Serial number 160XXX, located on the butt, identifies it as a genuine Fourth Model. This same number also appears on the cylinder and the barrel latch, confirming the gun's matching-number status. The original grips are in excellent condition and fit perfectly.

Mechanically, the firearm is in excellent working order in both single and double action modes. The lock-up is exceptionally tight, and the slight resistance when opening suggests limited use over its lifetime. Metal cartridge extraction functions correctly. The 3½-inch barrel, chambered in .32 S&W Short, features a bright bore with excellent, well-defined rifling, despite some minor signs of use.

This Smith & Wesson Double Action Fourth Model is a fine example of late 19th-century American pocket revolvers, prized for its original condition and excellent state of preservation.

The firearm comes with its official classification certificate designating it as Category D(e), issued by the Saint-Étienne National Proof House.
