Winchester Musket – Model 1885 Single-Shot "Winder"
Manufacture: 1918 – Caliber: .22 Short – Feature: US Army markings
History
The Winchester 'Winder' single-shot musket was derived from the robust Browning action of the Model 1885, specifically adapted to .22 caliber for training purposes (an initiative led by Colonel C. B. Winder). Manufactured in the early 20th century (with variants produced into the 1920s), the second version is distinguished by its specific finish details and adjustable rear sight.
Winchester launched this training version around 1904 to provide a rifle with dimensions similar to the standard service rifle, yet economical to shoot thanks to the .22 rimfire caliber—making it ideal for marksmanship training and indoor sessions. Military-issue examples often bear Ordnance markings (the Ordnance bomb, "U.S.," and arsenal numbers); these marked pieces are highly sought after by collectors for their authenticity, accuracy, and direct link to American military history.
Our Model
This Winchester 1885 Musket Winder (second model) comes to us in untouched condition. The metal components retain significant traces of their original bluing, with no visible oxidation. The Winchester markings are crisp and correct; military stamps—the Ordnance bomb and "U.S."—are present on the top of the receiver, near the "Patent" inscription. The serial number indicates a 1918 date of manufacture. The wooden furniture has never been restored; free from damage or missing sections, the wood retains a beautiful hue, marked only by light signs of handling and transport.
Mechanically, this robust firearm is in good working order. The 28-inch barrel features a clean, grey bore with excellent rifling, ensuring superb shooting accuracy. The firearm is equipped with adjustable sights that match the original pattern.
A fully functional Winchester collector's piece, made all the more interesting by its markings and its service with the US Army.
Category D firearm; sold without restriction and accompanied by a classification certificate issued by the Saint-Étienne National Proof House.
