Colt Revolver - Double Action Model 1895 Civilian
Manufactured in 1901 • .38 Long Colt Caliber • Near Mint Condition
Rare Colt Double Action Model 1895 civilian revolver manufactured in 1901 and preserved in exceptional condition. Retaining its original finish, superb Colt craftsmanship, and near-new mechanical condition, it represents a highly desirable addition to any collection of antique American firearms.
History
The Colt Double Action Army Model 1892 and its variants represent a major step in the evolution of American revolvers during the late 19th century. Featuring a modern double-action mechanism and a swing-out cylinder, these revolvers paved the way for Colt's 20th-century double-action designs. Produced in excess of 270,000 examples, they saw service with the U.S. Army during the final Indian Wars and the Spanish-American War, while also enjoying considerable commercial success on the civilian market.
Serving as the link between the legendary Colt Single Action Army "Peacemaker" and modern double-action revolvers, civilian examples preserved in exceptional condition are particularly sought after by collectors today.
Our Example
Manufactured in 1901, this Colt Double Action Model 1895 civilian revolver has survived more than a century in truly exceptional condition. The revolver retains an excellent original blue finish that remains bright and uniform, showing only minor signs of age. The hammer and trigger still display their attractive fire-blue finish, a hallmark of Colt's high-quality craftsmanship of the period. All original markings remain sharp and perfectly legible. The serial number confirms manufacture in 1901. The cylinder retains its crisp edges and contours, indicating extremely limited use throughout its lifetime. The original grip panels are correctly fitted and remain in near-new condition.
Mechanically, this revolver is equally impressive. Operation is smooth and precise in both single-action and double-action modes. The revolver exhibits no looseness and no noticeable cylinder gap wear, reflecting careful preservation over the years. Chambered in .38 Long Colt, the 6-inch barrel features a bright mirror bore that can fairly be described as near new.
With its outstanding state of preservation, both mechanically and cosmetically, this Colt Double Action Model 1895 is a first-class collector's piece for enthusiasts of antique American firearms. Rarely encountered in such fine condition, it will appeal equally to the discerning collector and the historical shooting enthusiast.
The revolver is accompanied by its official French Category D classification certificate issued by the Saint-Étienne National Proof House (Banc National d'Épreuve de Saint-Étienne).
