Colt Lightning Western Rifle, Beautiful Barrel, 44-40 Caliber, Made in 1896

Colt Lightning Carbine, medium frame, .44-40 caliber, Category D firearm, available for sale to adults, sold without accessories

History

The Colt Lightning "Slide Action" Rifle and Carbine, known by the acronym CLMR, held a major place in Colt's long gun production during the 19th century. Unlike lever-action rifles, a field largely dominated by Winchester and Marlin, Colt offered a high-performance alternative with a pump-action mechanism. Available in three sizes and several calibers, this range was produced in over 195,000 units, including nearly 90,000 in the Medium Frame version.

Among the most sought-after calibers, the .44-40, compatible with the Colt Frontier Six Shooter revolver, remains particularly prized by collectors. Rapid fire, maneuverability, and smooth mechanics make Colt Lightning revolvers highly sought after today and true relics of the American West.

Our Model

A desirable example in pristine condition. The metal parts show no corrosion and retain all Colt markings, including the essential "44 Cal." on the left side of the barrel and the foal on the frame—a particularly fragile marking that would disappear during restoration. The serial number, 80XXX, indicates a manufacture date of 1896, still within the era of the American West. This firearm also bears British inspection marks and retains its saddle ring. The original wood and forend have a beautiful, even color, free of damage, with only minor signs of use. The well-fitted metal butt plate harmoniously completes the overall design.

The mechanical condition is excellent: smooth action and powerful cartridge ejection. The 20-inch barrel in .44-40 caliber features a light gray bore with deep rifling, ensuring excellent accuracy.

This beautiful Colt Lightning rifle, a representative example of long guns from the American West, is a sought-after collector's item.

This historical firearm is classified as Category D and comes with its official classification certificate issued by the National Proof House of Saint-Étienne.
