History

The release of the Colt New Police in 1896 marked a turning point for the New York Police Department, offering the opportunity to standardize its officers' sidearms. At the time, law enforcement agencies used a wide variety of revolvers—often obsolete and chambered in disparate calibers—which complicated logistics and maintenance. Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt, a shooting enthusiast and ardent proponent of police modernization, personally tested the weapon before ordering 4,500 units in .32 caliber, thereby establishing a new standard for New York law enforcement. Thanks to its light weight, accuracy, and handling, the Colt New Police was a resounding success; however, with fewer than 50,000 units produced up to 1907, it is highly sought after by collectors today.
