History
The Colt Single Action Army Model 1873 black powder revolver, better known as the Colt Peacemaker, is a true legend in the world of firearms. Introduced in 1873 by the Colt Manufacturing Company, it quickly became popular thanks to its robustness, reliability, and iconic role in the history of the American West. Adopted by the U.S. Army from its launch to equip cavalry regiments, it gained immediate renown. Produced in 36 different calibers, originally offered with three barrel lengths and two types of finish, it became the legendary weapon of the Wild West. Its legend extended far beyond the American border, reaching Hollywood, where it became the ultimate symbol of the Western.
In 1892, Colt introduced a major evolution of its famous SAA revolver by using stronger steel for its frames. This version, known as the "black powder to smokeless powder feature" or simply "Smokeless frame," adopted a through-pin cylinder system, replacing the traditional screw. This modification, designed to anticipate the widespread adoption of smokeless powder, marked a key step in the evolution of the Colt SAA. However, it is important to note that Colt only officially guarantees the use of smokeless powder on models manufactured after 1900.
Our Model
This 1898 Colt revolver has undergone a meticulous restoration designed to highlight its superb antique engraving, painstakingly executed in the "Scroll" style, characteristic of late 19th-century Colt decorations. The photos show the fineness of the designs and the quality of the workmanship. The restoration also restored a light tint to the metal parts without altering the engraving details or the original markings. The trigger retains its magnificent "fire blue" color, typical of Colt production. The markings are accurate, including the Colt address on two lines on the short barrel, as well as the delicate and still clearly visible famous foal marking. The serial number 178XXX, present on various parts of the frame, corresponds to a late 1898 production; however, there is a slight alteration under the grip. The overall design is enhanced by luxurious, perfectly fitted bone grips that accentuate the elegance of this firearm.
Mechanically, this restored Colt is in perfect condition: no play or gaps, four crisp and well-defined clicks, and excellent indexing. Its short 4 3/4-inch barrel, chambered in .45 caliber, has a bright, flawless bore and deep rifling that ensures excellent accuracy.
This prestigious firearm, combining high-quality antique engraving with expert restoration, is a remarkable piece, both for collectors and for shooting.
