History
The Colt Single Action Army (SAA) revolver—or Colt Peacemaker—is arguably the most iconic firearm in the history of the American West and a true symbol of the conquest of the Frontier. Introduced in 1873, it was the first solid-frame revolver developed by Colt to use centerfire metallic cartridges. The initial versions, chambered in .45 Colt (or .45 Long Colt) with a 7½-inch barrel, quickly became the standard. To meet growing demand, Colt soon diversified its offerings, introducing calibers compatible with long guns, such as the .44-40 and .38-40. Models with shorter 4¾-inch barrels—which were easier to handle—also gained popularity, becoming favorites among cowboys during the legendary gunfights of the Frontier era.
Starting in 1892, Colt significantly upgraded its iconic SAA revolver by manufacturing the frames from stronger steel. This version—known as the "smokeless frame" (or the "black powder to smokeless powder" variant)—is distinguished by a cross-pin system that replaced the screw previously used to secure the cylinder pin. This evolution reflected Colt's intent to adopt smokeless powder, anticipating the technological advancements of the time. However, it is important to note that Colt only officially sanctioned the use of smokeless powder for models produced after 1900.
Our Model
This Colt Peacemaker Model 1873 Single Action Army revolver, manufactured in 1898, comes to us in excellent, untouched original condition. The metal parts are free of corrosion and display a beautiful light-grey "gunmetal" patina. The frame retains lovely traces of original case hardening, while remnants of the period bluing are still visible in the most protected areas. The markings are deeply stamped and perfectly correct—notably the two-line Colt address on the top of the barrel, characteristic of short-barreled versions. The Colt "Rampant Colt" logo, typically very fine in detail, remains perfectly legible here. This revolver is all-matching, with serial number 179XXX appearing on all major components, confirming its 1898 manufacture. As such, it falls under Category D (historical firearms).
Its mechanical condition is exceptional: there is no play or cylinder gap; the four iconic Colt SAA clicks are crisp and distinct; and the action is smooth with a light trigger pull. All these factors ensure perfect operation. The 4¾-inch barrel, chambered in .38-40 (also known as .38 WCF), features a light-grey bore with excellent rifling, ensuring great accuracy. One screw still retains its "fire blue" finish, and all screw heads are in perfect condition, testifying to careful maintenance. The revolver is fitted with original, perfectly-fitted Gutta-percha grips that offer a highly realistic look, adding a touch of elegance to the piece.
This rare piece, in remarkable condition, will delight both enthusiasts of the American West and collectors of antique American firearms.
This revolver is sold with the Colt letter confirming these details and indicating its provenance.
