History
The US Army made the right choice when it adopted the Colt Single Action Army as its standard-issue revolver in 1873, marking a pivotal moment in military weaponry following the Civil War. This revolver quickly became the symbol of the "Bluecoats"—particularly within the US Cavalry—playing a crucial role in the Indian Wars on the Plains, the protection of the Frontier, and the saga of the Wild West. Beyond American borders, it also saw service in international theaters. The US Army opted for the .45 caliber, chosen for its firepower, and ordered over 37,000 Colt Single Action Army units. This caliber offered an undeniable tactical advantage against threats encountered in the field, combining ruggedness with effectiveness. For collectors and specialists in historical firearms, the year of production is a decisive factor. It allows one not only to identify the military inspector who approved the weapon but also to trace its potential history during the Indian Wars, thereby adding a valuable heritage dimension to each piece. These details provide a deeper understanding of the journey of these legendary Colt revolvers—witnesses to a fascinating era of American history.
Our Model
This Colt Single Action Army revolver is a genuine piece of history, featuring the issue marking "2 SC 14" clearly visible on the butt of the grip. Does this mark indicate a "second life" after its service in the US Cavalry? It is difficult to say for certain. In any case, this unique feature gives this military handgun an even more desirable appeal. Certain parts, notably the barrel and cylinder, have been restored with a deep blue finish that remains in excellent condition despite some signs of wear. The frame displays a light gunmetal patina, with traces of case hardening visible at the front. Military inspector D.F.C.'s mark is visible on the frame, alongside the Colt factory mark; a "G" appears on both the frame and the butt. The "US" marking is also present on the frame. The Colt address inscription on the barrel is correct and clearly legible. The serial number 113XXX—indicating 1884 manufacture—is matching, appearing identically on the various parts of the weapon. The cylinder, however, bears no markings, likely due to a past re-bluing. The issue marking "2 SC 14" remains clearly visible on the butt.
Mechanically, the revolver is in excellent working order with virtually no play. Indexing is perfect, all four clicks are present, and the trigger pull is smooth; this revolver has truly stood the test of time. The 7½-inch barrel (chambered in .45 Colt) has a mirror-like bore with deep rifling. The grip is splendid and retains its original markings—including the inspector's cartouche, a rarity—though the wood has shrunk slightly over time.
A true piece of American history, this collectible Colt military revolver is in superb condition, remaining fully functional after all these years.
The weapon comes with a certificate from the Saint-Étienne proof house classifying it as a Category D firearm.
