Remington Revolver – Model 1875
Manufactured: 1875–1888 – Caliber: .45 Colt – Period Engraving
Rare Remington Model 1875 chambered in .45 Colt, in a particularly sought-after configuration with its 5½-inch barrel, and featuring fine engraving whose execution appears to be original.
History
The Remington Model 1875 revolver was manufactured from 1875 to 1888 by Remington Arms to compete with the revolvers of Colt and Smith & Wesson. Designed for the powerful metallic cartridges that were rapidly gaining popularity on the American market, it was primarily offered in .44 Remington and .44 WCF calibers. More limited production runs were also made in .45 Colt, which explains the rarity of surviving examples in this configuration today. Most Model 1875 revolvers were equipped with a 7½-inch barrel. The example presented here, fitted with a 5½-inch barrel, therefore represents a particularly uncommon variant. Total production of the model is generally estimated at between 30,000 and 40,000 examples. Unlike Colt, Remington does not have factory records allowing the origin of a specific engraving to be confirmed. The scrollwork decorating this example is nevertheless typical of period engraving styles and appears to have been executed long ago, most likely during the revolver's period of use.
Our Example
We present here a particularly rare Remington revolver Model 1875, combining several highly desirable features. It is chambered in .45 Colt and retains its original 5½-inch barrel, an uncommon configuration for this model.
The revolver features scroll engraving that appears to be period work and was most likely executed at the factory. The silver nickel finish is largely preserved, showing only natural wear consistent with age and use, which contributes to the overall presentation of the piece. These signs of use are particularly visible at the muzzle, further confirming that the barrel corresponds to the revolver’s original configuration. Traces of black powder residue remain visible on the front face of the cylinder, even within the engraved areas, bearing witness to the age and historical use of this firearm. The grips are made of checkered wood and are perfectly fitted.
The action is in good working condition, with only slight play and cylinder gap wear consistent with normal use of an antique revolver. The 5½-inch barrel in .45 Colt retains a fine satin bore with strong rifling and only light signs of use.
This Remington Model 1875 therefore combines a rare .45 Colt chambering, a 5½-inch barrel, probable period engraving and a largely preserved nickel finish.
The revolver is accompanied by its certificate issued by the Saint-Étienne National Proof House classifying it in Category D.
