The introduction of the Prairie Belt into cavalry equipment was an immediate success. At that time, Captain Mills of the 3rd Cavalry Regiment was already studying a new system. To improve and strengthen the previous model, the woven 1877-1881 cavalry cartridge belt introduced a major innovation: a seamless woven cotton system. This model follows in the tradition of Prairie Belts before the introduction of the brass buckle models, which became emblematic of Mills belts.

US Cavalry Mills Indian Wars Belt
Our Mills "Prairie Belt," also known as the "Metcalf Belt," is in excellent condition. The cotton has retained its beautiful original color. The leather section is supple, with a small repair near the buckle. An acceptance mark is visible on a leather loop.

This Mills Prairie Belt is a rare piece of standard-issue equipment for the US Cavalry during the Indian Wars.
