Colt Revolver – "New Police" Model, known as "Cop and Thug"
Manufactured in 1884 – .38 Colt Caliber – Feature: Version with an ejector rod.
History
The Colt "New Police" revolver is one of the iconic models produced by Colt in the late 19th century. Manufactured only between 1882 and 1886—with a total production run of approximately 3,500 to 4,000 units across all variants—it is considered today to be one of the rarest metallic-cartridge Colts from the black-powder era.
Despite its limited production, the range of configurations offered was remarkable: versions with or without an ejector rod; chambered in .32, .38, or .41 Colt; barrel lengths ranging from 2½ to 6 inches; and grip options ranging from standard "COLT" markings to specific decorative motifs depicting a police officer and a criminal—the source of the "Cop and Thug" nickname. It is a true transitional Colt, illustrating the brand's shift toward modern compact models.
Our Model
This specimen is in a superb configuration, retaining a large proportion of its original nickel finish, which is uniform and untouched. The hammer retains its original Colt "fire-blue" finish. The markings on the top of the barrel and the ".38" on the frame are perfectly correct and clearly legible. The delicate acid-etched "New Police 38" panel remains remarkably intact and readable—a highly desirable feature on this model, as the marking is often worn away over time. The serial number (17XXX), stamped on the butt, indicates production in 1884. The original grips featuring the "COLT" logo—which are far rarer than the "Cop and Thug" pictorial version—are in excellent condition and free of any defects.
Mechanically, this revolver is in exemplary condition: operation with virtually no play, a negligible barrel-cylinder gap, crisp cocking, precise indexing, and a smooth trigger pull. The 4½-inch barrel, chambered in .38 Colt, features a mirror-like bore with deep rifling and only slight signs of use.
A rare opportunity to acquire a Colt New Police in remarkable condition—a true collector's piece for the discerning enthusiast of American black-powder era firearms.
