History
Designed by John Marlin, the Marlin Model 1893 is one of the most significant American lever-action rifles of the late 19th century. Introduced in 1893, it quickly established itself as the primary competitor to Winchester Repeating Arms Company rifles, thanks to its robust mechanism and solid-top receiver with square-bolt locking—a design renowned for its strength.
The Model 1893 was among the first rifles chambered for the .30-30 Winchester cartridge, a revolutionary round utilizing smokeless powder. This innovation marked a decisive milestone in the evolution of American long guns, offering increased power, accuracy, and range for both hunting and target shooting. Featuring a forged steel receiver, a round or octagonal barrel (depending on the version), and an American walnut stock, the Marlin 1893 became the direct ancestor of the famous Marlin Model 336. Today, it remains a premier American collector's piece from the Wild West era.
Our Model
This Marlin Model 1893 rifle in .30-30 Winchester caliber is in excellent condition, both aesthetically and mechanically. The receiver and lever retain traces of their original case-hardening, while the barrel displays a beautiful, uniform blued finish. The markings are crisp and legible: the manufacturer's address and patent details on the barrel, the .30-30 Winchester caliber designation, and the famous "Special Smokeless Steel" stamp. The serial number, clearly stamped on the underside of the firearm, confirms it was manufactured during the early years of production. The wood furniture is entirely original, boasting a lovely, uniform patina with only minor signs of use. The gutta-percha buttplate, featuring the Marlin monogram, is perfectly fitted and remarkably well-preserved.
Mechanically, the rifle functions flawlessly: the action is smooth, the lock-up is solid, the firing pin strike is crisp, and the mechanism is sound. Its 24-inch barrel features a pristine, mirror-like bore with deep, well-defined rifling.
This Marlin Model 1893 is a remarkable example of the classic American Western rifle, combining authenticity and excellent condition with the legendary .30-30 Winchester caliber.
The firearm is sold with a classification certificate designating it as a Category D historical weapon, issued by the Saint-Étienne National Proof House.
