Rare Revolver Smith & Wesson Ladysmith Early 1st Model .22 Caliber
Smith & Wesson Lady Smith 1st Model revolver, Category D firearm, sold without accessories
History
The Smith & Wesson First Model Ladysmith is a collectible revolver classified as Category D due to its historical significance, despite production beginning in 1902. Produced in only 4,575 units between 1902 and 1906, it represents a major advancement in handgun design. This pioneering model broke with break-barrel revolvers by adopting a drop-down cylinder, an innovative mechanism called the "Hand Ejector," which would become the standard for subsequent generations. Its 7-shot cylinder in .22 Long caliber makes it a compact and elegant firearm, specifically designed for shooters seeking precision and maneuverability.
Smith & Wesson Ladysmith – First Model – Original Blue Finish
Our Model
The Smith & Wesson Ladysmith First Model is a rare collector's item, particularly sought after when presented in its original, unaltered blued finish.
This example is distinguished by its deep and even bluing, covering approximately 95% of the surface, and by a hammer with superb original case hardening, still clearly visible. The deeply engraved factory markings are perfectly legible and consistent, both on the cylinder and the frame. The serial number 16XX, stamped under the butt plate and on the cylinder, attests to early production of this iconic model. The original gutta-percha grips, finely molded and perfectly fitted, are in remarkable condition: without wear, cracks, or chips.
Mechanically, this revolver is fully functional, with precise and smooth action. The cylinder opens, cases are ejected, and the firing and indexing are all performed without the slightest hitch. The mechanism operates equally well in single and double action, with no play or gaps in the locking mechanism. The 3 1/2-inch barrel, chambered in .22 Long, has an exceptional, near-mint, mirror-like bore.
With its remarkable aesthetic condition, near-mint mechanics, and rarity in this configuration, this Ladysmith First Model is a centerpiece for any prestigious collection of early 20th-century American firearms.
Category D firearm, sold with its classification certificate from the BNE (National Firearms Bureau) of Saint-Étienne, available for sale without restriction.
