Remington Revolver – New Model Army Conversion

Manufactured: 1868+ – Caliber: .44 Rimfire – Metallic Cartridge Conversion

Remington New Model Army Conversion revolver in .44 Rimfire caliber, a black powder collector's item illustrating the historical transition between the percussion revolvers of the Civil War and the first American metallic cartridges. History: Following the Civil War, American manufacturers sought to modernize their percussion revolvers to adapt them to the new metallic cartridges. Through a licensing agreement with Smith & Wesson, holder of the patent for the drilled cylinder, Remington developed several conversion models for the civilian and military markets. The Remington New Model Army Conversion is directly derived from the famous revolver commonly known as the Model 1858 and is one of the iconic firearms of this transitional period toward metallic cartridges.

Our Model

Note: This revolver is identical to the illustration on page 63 of the reference book Colt Conversions and Other Percussion Revolvers.

This Remington New Model Army Conversion features metal parts that have acquired an elegant dark gunmetal patina, perfectly in keeping with its era. The rear sight has been replaced with a coin, an early modification typical of many Frontier firearms; stars are visible on one side, and the inscription "RICA" from an American coin on the other. The original markings are accurate, including the "New Model" inscription on the barrel and the 1858 patent on the frame. Several inspector's marks remain visible under the barrel and on the frame. Serial number 50XXX corresponds to a late 1863 manufacture of the original revolver before its conversion. The walnut grip is original, perfectly fitted, with a small, inconsequential chip; any military cartridge that may have been present has since disappeared due to wear.

Mechanically, the revolver is in good working order. It cocks cleanly, has a smooth trigger pull, and correct indexing. The gun has no cylinder gap and only very slight play in the cylinder. The 8-inch .44 Rimfire barrel has a satin finish with deep, beautiful rifling and no major damage.

This Remington New Model Army Conversion exemplifies the evolution of American firearms, linking the percussion revolvers of the Civil War to the first metallic cartridge firearms of the conquest of the West.

The firearm is accompanied by its official Category D classification certificate, issued by the National Proof House of Saint-Étienne.
