Sharps Carbine – New Model Conversion

Manufactured: 1858-1863 – Caliber: .50-70 Government – 22-inch barrel

An iconic American carbine of the Civil War, the Indian Wars, and the history of the American Frontier, the Sharps New Model ranks among the most significant military firearms of the 19th century. This example was converted at the request of the U.S. Government for the use of metallic cartridges, illustrating the evolution of military firearms in the post-Civil War era.

History

The Sharps New Model 1859 is considered one of the most important military carbines of the American Civil War. Designed around the falling-block action developed by Christian Sharps and later refined by Richard Lawrence, it became renowned for its strength, reliability, and outstanding accuracy. Originally chambered in .52 percussion caliber and using combustible cartridges, these carbines were produced in large quantities to fulfill Union military contracts during the Civil War. Highly regarded for its battlefield effectiveness, the Sharps carbine saw extensive service with Union forces, particularly within the cavalry.

Following the war, advances in ammunition technology prompted the U.S. Army to modernize many firearms remaining in service and storage. In October 1867, a contract was awarded to Sharps to convert New Model 1859, 1863, and 1865 carbines for the use of metallic cartridges. These upgraded carbines subsequently saw widespread service with the U.S. Cavalry during the Indian Wars.

Our Example

This Sharps New Model 1859 is offered in its metallic-cartridge conversion configuration, corresponding to the official military conversion program implemented after the Civil War. It retains an attractive finish, with metal surfaces displaying a pleasing, even patina and no significant oxidation. Original markings remain clearly visible, including serial number 59XXX as well as several inspection and acceptance marks. The walnut stock and forearm exhibit an attractive, uniform patina with only light handling marks. The metal buttplate is correctly fitted and bears the inspector's mark "W". The carbine also retains its original saddle ring, a characteristic feature of its military configuration.

Mechanically, the carbine is in excellent condition. The operating lever functions smoothly, allowing easy cocking and operation. The hammer spring remains strong, and the trigger pull is crisp. The 22-inch barrel, chambered for .50-70 Government, features a bright bore with strong rifling and only minor signs of use.

With its distinguished military history, official metallic-cartridge conversion, and excellent state of preservation, this Sharps is an outstanding collector's piece for enthusiasts of Civil War and American Frontier firearms.

The firearm is accompanied by its official French Category D classification certificate issued by the Saint-Étienne National Proof House.
