History
Designed by Arthur W. Savage and introduced in 1899, the Savage Model 1899 (renamed Model 99 in the 1920s) became a benchmark in American lever-action rifles. It is distinguished by its internal rotary magazine compatible with pointed bullets, its locked rotating bolt, its loaded chamber indicator, and its cartridge counter. Chambered in numerous calibers (.303 Savage, .250-3000, .300 Savage, .30-30, etc.), it enjoyed enormous success with hunters and sport shooters and remained in production for much of the 20th century. Today, the Model 1899/99 is highly sought after for its technical innovation and historical significance.
Our Model
This Savage Model 1899 Takedown rifle, manufactured in 1932, is in remarkable condition.
The metal parts have retained most of their original factory bluing, which is still deep and even. The markings—manufacturer's address, model designation, and caliber—are accurate, clear, and perfectly legible. The serial number 341XXX confirms manufacture in 1932. The varnished wood, in the "deluxe" version, has a uniform color and is in excellent condition. The takedown configuration allows for disassembly into two parts, facilitating transport and storage. The original metal buttplate, marked with the Savage logo, is perfectly fitted.
Mechanically, the rifle is in excellent working order: smooth action, easy cocking, and secure locking. The 22-inch barrel has a mirror-bright bore that can be described as near-new. The rifle is equipped with sights from the prestigious Marble's brand.
This rifle, both elegant and high-performing, perfectly illustrates the quality of manufacture and the reputation for accuracy of the Savage 1899, while also being a fully functional collector's item.
Sale includes the official certificate of classification as a historical firearm (category D), issued by the National Proof House of Saint-Étienne.
