History
The Smith & Wesson company quickly established itself as one of the biggest names in American gunmaking thanks to the quality and reliability of its products. The First Model Single Shot 1891, introduced in 1893, was one of the first single-shot pistols specifically designed for precision shooting. This model, a true precursor to a highly successful series, was produced in several calibers and left its mark on its era, lastingly inspiring subsequent generations of Smith & Wesson competition firearms. The first model uses the frame of the Smith & Wesson Third Model .38 caliber revolver, allowing for interchangeable barrels depending on the caliber (.32 or .38). Of the 1,251 produced, only 862 were chambered in .22 caliber, making this version particularly sought after today. Renowned for its remarkable accuracy and build quality, this model was adopted by the American Olympic shooting team as well as by many top-level shooters. It remains an iconic and essential piece in any collection of 19th-century target firearms or match pistols.
Our Model
This example of the Smith & Wesson First Model Single Shot 1891 is in consistent used condition, with a patinated original bluing and some minor signs of wear. The hammer still retains beautiful original case hardening marks, attesting to its authenticity. The markings are perfectly legible and consistent: the brand logo on the frame, and the address and patents engraved on the top of the barrel. The serial number 210XX, visible on the grip and barrel, corresponds to an early production model. The grip panels, typical of this model, are well-fitted; the right one has a small chip on its upper portion.
The action is fully functional, with a smooth and precise mechanism: opening, extraction, and firing are all effortless. The 8-inch barrel, chambered in .22 Long Rifle, has a light gray bore with deep rifling, ensuring excellent accuracy.
This Smith & Wesson First Model Single Shot 1891 pistol, combining elegance, rarity, and precision, will appeal to both the discerning collector and the passionate shooter.
Firearm sold with its classification certificate – Category D(e) historical firearm issued by the Saint-Étienne National Proof House.
