Smith & Wesson double-action revolver with mother-of-pearl grips

History

Production of the first Smith & Wesson Safety revolver model began in 1888. This "hammerless" revolver—featuring no exposed hammer—was ideally suited for discreet and safe carry, thanks to a locking mechanism located on the grip. It was also easy to use, even when carried under street clothes, thereby meeting the personal security needs of the era. Over 90,000 units of this first model were produced. When including production figures for all three .32-caliber Safety models, the total exceeds 240,000 units. This success underscores Smith & Wesson's dominance in the market for .32 and .38 caliber revolvers.

Our Model

This nickel-plated Smith & Wesson Hammerless revolver remains in pristine, original condition. The nickel finish covers the entire surface, save for minor losses at the muzzle and along the cylinder edges. The barrel markings remain clearly visible, despite slight wear. The serial number (45XXX) indicates early production; this number also appears on the butt, the cylinder, and the cylinder latch.

The mechanism is fully functional. There is no play in the frame, and the action—which is slightly stiff—suggests the weapon has seen little use. The extractor operates perfectly, cylinder indexing is flawless, and the firing mechanism works without issue. There is slight play consistent with normal use, which is entirely acceptable. The 3½-inch barrel (chambered in .32 S&W) features excellent rifling and a uniform grey bore. The original mother-of-pearl grips remain in very good condition, despite the weapon's age. This fine Smith & Wesson collector's piece offers the opportunity to acquire—at a reasonable price—the first model of an iconic series.

The firearm comes with its Saint-Étienne certificate.
