Smith & Wesson DA Revolver (3rd Model) in Original Box
History
The Smith & Wesson Safety Hammerless double-action revolver met a strong demand for a compact weapon without an external hammer—ideal for discreet pocket carry. Designed to meet the requirements of the late 19th century, it achieved remarkable success. With over 250,000 units produced between 1888 and 1937, it was released in five successive versions. Its compact size, simplified mechanism, affordable price, and top-break opening system contributed significantly to its popularity. The model presented here is a late-production version of the Third Model, chambered for the .32 black-powder metallic cartridge. It is considered the most refined of the series. It is an iconic example of black-powder metallic-cartridge firearms, falling into the "Category D" classification for revolvers and pistols designed prior to 1900.
Our Model
This revolver comes with its rare original box, which is well-preserved and perfectly suited to the model.
It combines striking aesthetics—featuring its original nickel plating and superb mother-of-pearl grips—with excellent mechanical function. Approximately 95% of the original nickel plating remains, offering a brilliant, impressive finish; only a few minor areas of loss are visible on the cylinder. The trigger guard retains its original, well-preserved blued finish. The serial number 237XXX is fully matching (found on the butt, cylinder, and opening mechanism), confirming it is indeed a Third Model specimen.
The mechanism operates perfectly in double-action mode, featuring precise cylinder indexing and a crisp hammer strike. The opening system operates smoothly and easily. The 3-inch barrel of this .32 Smith & Wesson features a bright bore with crisp rifling and shows only minor signs of use. Finally, the mother-of-pearl grips—in perfect condition—enhance this deluxe version of the Smith & Wesson revolver, making it an exceptional collector's piece.
The firearm comes with a certificate from the St. Etienne National Proof House classifying it as a Category D weapon.
