Smith & Wesson Double Action 4th Model Revolver, .32 S&W
Manufactured from 1893 onward – Caliber: .32 S&W Short – 3-inch Mirror Bore Barrel
Smith & Wesson Double Action 4th Model pocket revolver, preserved in excellent original condition. This late 19th-century example stands out for its remarkably well-preserved factory finish, excellent mechanical condition, and 3-inch barrel with a bright mirror bore.
History
The Smith & Wesson Double Action pocket revolvers, offered in both .32 and .38 calibers, enjoyed considerable success in the late 19th century. The 4th Model represented an evolution of the earlier Double Action revolvers, incorporating improvements to the action and cylinder locking system. Unlike the Hammerless models, it retained an exposed hammer and could be fired in both single-action and double-action modes.
Our Example
This Smith & Wesson Double Action 4th Model in .32 S&W Short caliber remains in near-mint condition. Its original finish retains an attractive and even coloration, with only a few light marks from age and handling. The hammer and trigger still display their original case-hardened finish. Factory markings, deeply stamped on the barrel, remain crisp and clearly visible. Serial number 243XXX, found on the butt, cylinder, and latch assembly, confirms that all major components are matching. The grips are in excellent condition and fit perfectly.
The mechanical condition indicates very limited use, a characteristic reflected in the slight resistance felt when opening the revolver. Operation is excellent in both single and double action, with no play or excessive cylinder gap. The 3-inch barrel, chambered in .32 S&W Short, features a bright mirror bore with strong, well-defined rifling.
With its exceptional state of preservation, original finish, and high-quality mechanical condition, this Smith & Wesson is an excellent example of the craftsmanship of the famous American manufacturer at the end of the 19th century.
Category D antique firearm, sold with its official classification certificate issued by the Saint-Étienne National Proof House (Banc National d'Épreuve).
