Smith & Wesson Ladysmith First Model
Manufactured 1902+ – .22 Long Caliber – 3½" Barrel – Original Condition
This rare Smith & Wesson Ladysmith First Model revolver retains a fine original appearance and excellent mechanical condition. Produced for only a few years with fewer than 5,000 units made, this elegant American firearm is today among the most sought-after models for collectors of early 20th-century Smith & Wesson revolvers.
History
Introduced in 1902, the Smith & Wesson Ladysmith First Model marked a significant milestone in the evolution of the American firm's revolvers. Manufactured between 1902 and 1906 with a total production run of just 4,575 units, it was designed around the new side-swing cylinder system—known as the "Hand Ejector"—which gradually replaced the famous "Top Break" revolvers that had established Smith & Wesson's reputation in the late 19th century. Compact, lightweight, and modern for its time, the Ladysmith was aimed at a civilian clientele seeking a discreet, easy-to-carry firearm. Chambered in .22 Long (then designated as .22 S&W), it features a seven-round cylinder and incorporates technical innovations that would be adopted in many subsequent Smith & Wesson revolvers of the 20th century. Despite being of relatively recent manufacture for a collector's item, its historical significance and limited production numbers have earned it a Category D(e) classification in France today.
Our Model
This Smith & Wesson Ladysmith retains a significant portion of its original blued finish, presenting a particularly attractive appearance. The hammer and trigger still show clear traces of their original case-hardening, indicating that the weapon has seen little handling over its lifetime. The sharp edges of the cylinder further confirm minimal use. The manufacturer's markings remain crisp, deep, and perfectly legible. The serial number The number "30XX" appears on the butt, the frame, and the cylinder, confirming the matching nature and integrity of the assembly. The original grips are in excellent condition and bear the firearm's serial number engraved on the inside—a detail particularly prized by collectors.
The mechanical action is in excellent working order. The barrel forcing cone is untouched. Cylinder opening, shell ejection, indexing, and firing all function correctly in both single and double-action modes. Cylinder play and the barrel-cylinder gap are minimal, ensuring the firearm's proper operation. The 3½-inch barrel (chambered in .22 Long) features a light-grey bore with some signs of use; the rifling remains distinct and deep, indicating a barrel that has retained good shooting qualities.
Rare in this condition, this Smith & Wesson Ladysmith First Model is a compelling collector's piece for enthusiasts of early 20th-century American firearms and the company's early "Hand Ejector" revolvers.
The firearm comes with its official classification certificate (Category D(e)) issued by the Saint-Étienne National Proof House.
