Manufacture: 1891+ – Caliber: .22 Long Rifle – Features: 10-inch barrel
History
Smith & Wesson quickly established a reputation for the quality of its firearms. The Smith & Wesson First Model Single Shot 1891 pistol was introduced in 1893 as a single-shot model specifically designed for precision shooting. As the forerunner to a highly successful series offered in various calibers, it defined its era and inspired many generations of handguns. This model utilized the frame of the Smith & Wesson .38 caliber revolver, allowing for interchangeable barrels in .32 or .38 calibers. Of the 1,251 units manufactured, only 862 were chambered in .22 caliber, making this a highly sought-after version. Renowned for its performance, it was adopted by the U.S. Olympic shooting team and numerous precision shooters. Today, this model holds a prized place in any collection of late 19th-century firearms.
Our Model
This Smith & Wesson Model 1891 First Model pistol features a rare nickel-plated finish and a 10-inch barrel—an uncommon and highly desirable configuration. The nickel plating is original; it has neither been restored nor cleaned, though it could be enhanced with appropriate cleaning. Some areas retain a brilliant shine, while others display a uniform patina consistent with the weapon's age. The hammer retains its original case-hardening—a desirable feature that attests to the excellent preservation of this specific piece. The markings are remarkably well-preserved—particularly the Smith & Wesson logo on the frame, which is known to be fragile on this model; here, it is perfectly crisp and fully legible, a major asset for the discerning collector. Serial number 17XXX appears on both the grip frame and the barrel latch, confirming the firearm's integrity and authenticity. The original gutta-percha grips, featuring the Smith & Wesson logo, are in excellent condition—perfectly fitted and free of defects—harmoniously completing the piece.
Mechanically, the pistol is in excellent working order: the lock-up is rock-solid with no play, the action opens smoothly, and the cocking and trigger pull are consistent and pleasant. The 10-inch barrel, chambered in .22 Long Rifle, features a bright grey bore with crisp, well-defined rifling and only minor, inconsequential signs of use, ensuring highly satisfactory accuracy.
This Smith & Wesson Model 1891 First Model, featuring a rare nickel finish, remains fully functional and represents a prime addition to any collection of late 19th-century American firearms.
The firearm comes with its official classification certificate (Category D) issued by the Saint-Étienne National Proof House.
